Agentic commerce readiness

Agentic commerce is online shopping carried out by AI agents on a buyer's behalf — the agent discovers products, compares them, and completes checkout inside an assistant like ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, or Perplexity, instead of on your storefront. Agentic commerce readiness is the measurable degree to which a store can be discovered, understood, and transacted with by those agents. A store is ready when its catalog, structured data, discovery files, and checkout endpoints satisfy the protocols the agents read: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This guide defines agentic commerce, explains ACP and UCP, and shows how to check a store across the five AI shopping surfaces — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Meta AI, and Microsoft Copilot.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is commerce mediated by AI agents that act for the buyer: discovering, comparing, and purchasing products through an assistant rather than a browser session on your site. The shift is measurable. AI referral sessions grew more than 8x year-over-year and AI-attributed orders roughly 13x on Shopify (Shopify Q1 2026 earnings, via PYMNTS, May 2026), and generative-AI seller traffic rose 693% during the Nov–Dec 2025 holiday window (Adobe Digital Insights, January 2026). The interface for that traffic is no longer your storefront — it is the agent's reading of your machine-readable signals.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is the open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets ChatGPT discover products, build a cart, and complete checkout without leaving the conversation. ACP launched 2025-09-29 and defines a product feed, a checkout flow, and a delegated-payment handshake. It is the protocol behind ChatGPT shopping. Stores integrate via the Stripe Agentic Commerce Suite and a set of REST endpoints the agent calls. We pin to ACP 2026-04-17 and re-pin on each spec release.

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is Google's open standard for agentic commerce across AI Mode and Gemini; Microsoft Copilot aligns to it. UCP launched 2026-01-11, and BigCommerce shipped UCP support 2026-04-08. UCP defines a discovery endpoint at /.well-known/ucp and a Merchant Center profile that agents read to surface, compare, and transact with your catalog. Shopify auto-generates the discovery endpoint via Catalog; most other platforms add it manually. We pin to UCP 2026-04-08.

ACP vs UCP: what's the difference?

ACP and UCP are complementary protocols, not competitors: ACP (OpenAI + Stripe) powers ChatGPT shopping, while UCP (Google) powers AI Mode and Gemini and is the standard Microsoft Copilot aligns to. A store ready for one is not automatically ready for the other. ACP centers on a product feed plus Stripe-backed checkout endpoints; UCP centers on the /.well-known/ucp discovery endpoint and a Google Merchant Center profile. Readiness means satisfying both, plus the GTIN-and-feed requirements that Perplexity and Meta AI read.

What is agentic commerce readiness?

Agentic commerce readiness is the measurable degree to which a store can be discovered, understood, and transacted with by AI shopping agents across the five surfaces. It is not a single score from one protocol; it spans discovery files (/llms.txt, /.well-known/ucp, robots.txt), structured data (Product JSON-LD, GTIN, brand, aggregateRating), product-data completeness, feed delivery, transaction endpoints, and crawlable trust and policy pages. A store can be wired into ACP or UCP and still fail — readiness is the gap between "integrated" and "actually legible to agents."

How do you check if a store is ready for ChatGPT shopping?

Check the four signals ChatGPT's ACP path reads: a discoverable, machine-readable product feed; valid Product JSON-LD with GTIN and brand on the PDP; the Stripe Agentic Commerce Suite live with the required ACP checkout endpoints reachable; and robots.txt allowing ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot. Our audit runs all of these against the pinned ACP spec and returns a ranked fix list. You can verify each one yourself by hand — readiness is falsifiable, not a black box.

How do you measure agentic commerce readiness?

We measure readiness with 82 checks across six categories — discovery, structured data, product data, feed, transaction readiness, and trust and policy — scored per surface against the pinned ACP and UCP specs, then returned as a 0–100 score with a ranked, spec-referenced fix list. The audit reads only public, crawlable signals; it does not modify the store. Each check deep-links to its spec reference, so any score is auditable. Read the full methodology for the per-check weights.

Platform-specific readiness

Readiness gaps differ by stack. See the platform guides for the exact admin paths: all platforms, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce.

Frequently asked questions

Is agentic commerce the same as conversational commerce?
No. Conversational commerce is a human chatting with a store (live chat, messaging). Agentic commerce is an AI agent acting for the buyer — discovering, comparing, and completing checkout — often with no human in the storefront at all. They use different protocols.
Do I need both ACP and UCP?
To be ready across the surfaces, yes. ACP governs ChatGPT shopping; UCP governs Google AI Mode and is what Copilot aligns to. A store ready for one is not automatically ready for the other.
Does agentic commerce readiness replace SEO?
No. It is adjacent. Traditional SEO optimizes for human search; agentic commerce readiness optimizes the machine-readable signals agents read to transact. Both can be true at once, and the structured-data work overlaps.
What is an AI readiness audit?
An AI readiness audit scores how discoverable, legible, and transactable a store is to AI shopping agents, then returns a ranked fix list referenced to the ACP and UCP specs. Ours is free, reads only public signals, and does not modify the store.
Which platforms does this apply to?
Any storefront an agent can crawl — Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and custom stacks. Platform-specific gaps differ: Shopify auto-generates /.well-known/ucp; BigCommerce and WooCommerce typically add it manually.
How current is the scoring?
The audit pins to specific ACP and UCP spec versions and re-pins on each spec release, so a score reflects the standard in force when it ran.
